Help UMass set the Guinness World Record for Largest New England Seafood Stew.

Guinness World Records

In 2011, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Dining Services (UMass Dining) successfully created the World’s Largest Stir-Fry (4,010lbs) during first week festivities. On the heels of this momentous achievement we decided to make an even bigger splash this year. On Labor Day, September 3rd, 2012, we will attempt to create the World’s Largest New England Seafood Stew at 6,500 pounds and set the new record as recognized by Guinness World Records. It is a great way to start off the new school year.

Our goals for attempting this Guinness World Record are to support sustainability, and promote healthy eating, regional cuisine and to build community – and to have some FUN, as we welcome back to school 27,000 students during an Welcome UMass Amherst Barbecue All-Green Barbeque. We plan to use vegetables from our student-run farm, the permaculture garden on campus, and from local farmers. In addition, we will only use sustainable seafood from New England and Alaska, and many other ingredients from New England. After setting the world record, the Seafood Stew will be offered to all in attendance. The cooking event will be led by Jet Tila of the Food Network, UMass Executive Chef Willie Sng, and the award winning UMass culinary team, and they will be aided by hundreds of student volunteers, administrators, and staff. The cost of the events will be covered entirely by our generous partners.
